Grant Making

UHAI EASHRI makes three different types of grants:

The criteria for awarding these grants are framed around the following pillars:

  • Policy and Legal Advocacy - challenging discriminatory law and policies and responding to human rights violations through grants for documentation, strategic litigation, research and alliance building in human rights, HIV/AIDS and faith sectors;
  • Rights-based service delivery - developing inclusive health and legal services for sexual minorities through grants for HIV/AIDS and sexual health services and education, legal aid;
  • Strengthening institutions - building organisational skills and systems and sustaining activism through grants for activist exchange visits and internships; human rights defenders' initiatives; core funding and seeding networks and coalitions;
  • Protecting human rights defenders - the programme does not provide emergency grants to individuals but it provides grants to strengthen organisations in the region which specialise in providing programmatic and financial support around security, emergencies and protection for LGBTI activists and organisations;
  • Media and culture - transforming public opinion and social attitudes through grants for media training, engaging religious institutions, film festivals;
  • Social enterprise - income generating activities and projects that intend to raise funds for the organisation;
  • Additional priority area for grant making - sustaining activism such as wellness and care of activists including therapy, group counselling, safe houses etc.

Eligibility criteria

All applications will be measured against the following:

·         Applicants must be working in any of the East African countries – Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda.

·         Priority will be given to organisations or programmes led and managed by sexual minorities and focused on LGBTI, MSM, WSW and/or sex worker health and rights within East Africa.

·         Grant applications from non-sexual minority led and managed organisations may be considered in the interest of alliance building.
